Exodus 30-32 (Psalm 40)

When I think about repentance and the frequency of repentance it is understood in scripture that repentance is ongoing - not that there is cyclic repentance for the same sin over and over again, rather that ongoing sanctification by the consecrating work of the Holy Spirit means that we are more and more sensitive to sin resulting in less time between sin and verbal confession/repentance of sin. When you are walking on a path and you are going the wrong way the re-direction is the turning point, and as it relates to sin, rebellion and pride, repentance is a step toward freedom that begins in faith and humility. The permanence of repentance is a peculiar thing to contemplate as it relates to sin cycles.

In the Exodus story the LORD and Moses are high on the mount Sinai for 40 days and nights where details for the tabernacle and priestly wares are given, all while the corrupt people of Israel have erected a false god - what God tells Moses upon this discovery is unfortunately all too familiar:

Exodus 32:8 (NIV) "They have been quick to turn away from what I have commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf."

How quick are we to turn to God willingly when our sin is so offensive and grievous to us we realize its ruinous effect on our spirit? Through trust and increased faith in God Almighty and a humble contrite heart we must approach the king's throne of grace with a posture of surrender daily and commit to living obedient lives of purity and consecration before the LORD - we are a chosen set-apart people for God and his purposes. The redeemed are set apart for the good work of the king and the kingdom whose sovereignty authority and universal rule is now and yet to come. As people of God we must yield, submit and obey willingly - God will not force man into submission, he must come willingly to the throne because God's moral law is written upon his heart.

Psalm 40:4,8 (NIV) "Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods... I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart."
