Numbers 5-6
Numbers chapter 6 outlines what a Nazirite vow is and how it is a period of consecration and dedication to the LORD which is paired with abstaining from grapes, grape juice, wine, raisins, or anything that comes from the grapevine including its seeds and skin, fermented drinks- including vinegar, and no razor must be used on their head. Ceremonially, after the period of the Nazirite vow dedication to the LORD is complete the hair from the Nazirite's head is to be cut off to symbolize their voluntary dedication. This passage seems to draw a direct connection between dedication, consecration and devotion which means to be set apart which is an open voluntary call for men and women of God.
Numbers 6:2-3 (NIV) "If a man or woman wants to make a special vow, a vow of dedication to the LORD as a Nazirite, they must abstain from wine and other fermented drink and must not drink vinegar made from wine or other fermented drink."
Similar to fasting, where a person is refraining from consuming food, a Nazirite does not take fruit from the vine in any form as a way of being set apart through holiness unto the LORD. I am reminded about the Leviticus reading on 2/19/2026 regarding the LORDs decree to the Israelites in outlining punishments for sin and how consecration is important because we as Christians are also the LORDs and have been set apart as a holy people and royal priesthood. Offering a sacrifice of thank offerings through genuine sacrificial worship, true repentance/turning from sin, is an outward expression of moral and spiritual obedience which is pleasing and acceptable to God - it is what he desires from us. (see also Psalm 40:6-8 and 50:13-15)
Leviticus 20:7-8,26 (NIV) "Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God. Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the LORD, who makes you holy... You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own."
As I was reading in the Numbers 6 passage I was reminded that the apostle Paul took what would seem to be a Nazirite vow in Cenchreae before he boarded a ship sailing for Ephesus. I think about what this means for believers today as it relates to abstaining from alcohol for a period of time, aside from a conversation regarding the system-wide physiological effects of alcohol, for personal-spiritual conviction and consecration unto the LORD reasons it seems that there is good reason for a 21st century Christian to take a Nazirite vow of holy devotion before the LORD for the sake of right relationship with the Holy One by coming out and being separate from the world.
